I spent equal parts of last night:
  1. sleeping
  2. trying to sleep
  3. getting bored of (2.) and reading The Thirteenth House instead.

So my 7:30 a.m. shift today? That was interesting. New specials, ~2 hours of sleep, and all compounded by the fact that it seems like all the cutest and most fascinating waitresses have been working the same shift as me lately. Charming ladies are charming, but also distracting.

When I wasn't being distracted by teh pretty or going, "Halp, how am I going to stay awake for another ____ hours?" I was obsessively pondering The Twelve Houses.

I now fangirl Sharon Shinn to infinity (even though I've only read one and a half of her books, so far), starting with an adoration for her choice of place and character names. They're made up, but made up so very well that I get a sensory thrill just from reading the words -- and that's reading, in book form, to myself. Not even audio book. And the world is so realistically and fully created; the characters are so well drawn. I'm utterly infatuated. Someone tell me if there's a Shinn fandom?

I'm halfway through The Thirteenth House. If anyone knows of fic that won't confuse me at this point, links would be splediferous -- I'm not concerned with spoilers, exactly; I just don't want to read something if I'm missing the backstory to understand what's going on.

I'm hatching my own plot bunnies, too, of course. I've been shipping Cammon/Justin since midway through the first book, and now I'm starting to think on the particulars. I could write so much shape changing crack for Kirra and Donnal. Or there's always shape-changed-drag!Kirra/Amelie -- shiftlings who can change into other people should definitely show up in more stories.

Sadly, I don't think I can write Senneth -- not yet, anyway. I adore her too much, on too many levels. I think it would turn weirdly self-insert-y.

I'm also having trouble with remembering what characters look like. There's some fandom overlap going on: for the whole first book, my image of Serra Kirra Danalustrous was Inara Serra. I've finally expunged that one now that I'm inside Kirra's head in this book. But now Tayse looks like Wyldon. WTF, self?

Anyway, I obviously have to hurry to read the rest of the series.

THAT will make Lisa happy *grin* Also, her fic Devoted is a must-read at the end of Thirteenth House.

there's always shape-changed-drag!Kirra/Amelie

Which I had never considered *flail*

I am incredibly curious about what you'll think about book three, since it is Justin's book and fascinating but also divides a few opinions.

I've never found much Twelve Houses fic, and sadly all I've written doesn't make much sense until after Reader and Raelynx (Senneth/Kirra, Kira/Mayva, mostly).

And let me just take a moment to be ridiculously happy that you flailed over the names. They are beautifully crafted things and seeing their particular syllables on a page, in full, just make me happy.

*flails more*

I'm sad that there's not much Twelve Houses fic, but OTOH, I'm consoled by the knowledge that you and Lisa have both written some of it -- so I'm positive it's excellent, and I can't wait to get to the point where I can read it! Maybe there's not an actual fandom yet, but just wait.

And let me just take a moment to be ridiculously happy that you flailed over the names. They are beautifully crafted things and seeing their particular syllables on a page, in full, just make me happy.

Yes. I can't explain why Brassenthwaite is the exact opposite of Jonthair, but I'm certain it is. (Ms. Pierce, I love you for your characters, but please don't keep making up their names on your own.)

OMG, yes. Especially if it's smutty shape-changing crack. (for some reason, Kirra/Donnal sex in my head almost *always* begins in animal-form. Is there something wrong with me?)

LOL, not unless the same thing is wrong with me.

Um..... maybe? "Puppies playing" lives in a totally separate part of my brain from "smut" and I have no idea what reaction will occur if I punch a hole in that wall. But if they shape-change at the exactly right point in the story, maybe I can pull it off.

I love Shinn's name-crafting so much. I think she created the idea of culture within simple naming, be it the lands (omg, can "Brassenthwaite" or "Danalustrous" be prettier) or the characters/titles - so many double-consonants: Cammon, Kirra, Pella, Merrenstow, serramerra, Senneth. It makes me so very happy. (and I'd say that she consistently does this in her world-building from book to book; even in a book where she uses normal names like "Bryan" or "Nolan", it fits perfectly within the context of her world.)

Unfortunately there's no greater Shinn fandom. There's a practically-dead livejournal group, and a few random fics here or there. I'm thinking you, Kit, Rosie, Mandi and I should start fanficcing sprees. ETA: there is also a sad lack of discussion in among fans, which is something I crave. I almost want to create a Shinn movement to fill the void. This is one of the reasons I pimp her so heavily.

And I encourage her other books, too! They're not all perfect (I have some *major* world-issues with her first series), but there's always something good to find in them.

(my mental image confession #1 - Sometime's Tayse's bulk enters my head as Shan-Yu from Mulan. WTF?)

Fic spree. I like this. I like this a great deal

and I wonder why there isn't any sort of fan presence--it's a bit bewildering. I've never found much except rather cursory discussion forums on her first series.

I often wonder if it's because of the different worlds. It seems like most communities I've come across simply squeal about which world they prefer (usually Samaria - boo!) and stop it at that.

I do random searches every so often for Shinn-fic, but I've never yielded more than five. Including both of ours. T_T

(I'm currently in the process of ranking her books/stories and explaining my stances. Be prepared for a long LJ entry in the future!)

I could totally get behind that.

... because I need yet another fandom. :p

And yet, when it's something this good, I can't not.

in shameless self-pimping, the first two of these three drabbles are unspoilery and need no more back story than what you already have. The third, however, does really need book 4.

Shameless self-pimping is exactly what I hoped you would do in response to this post! *scampers off to read*
