Dec. 21st, 2010 07:51 pmOh, Facebook.
The good: Miriam and Aurora are FB friends now, with the end result that they're commiserating with each other about their difficulties in interpreting male behavior -- meaning they grumble at me about it a little bit less! Huzzah! I mean, they're my best friends and I love them both to pieces and want them both to be happy, so yes, I'll listen. But.... they seem to want advice a lot of the time, and there's no reason in the world they should expect me to know much about (a)relationships or (b)men. So if they can help each other a little bit, that's excellent!
The bad: WTF is up with status update chain letters? Everyone who starts one should have their eyes stabbed out with a spork. Everyone who passes one along should have to clean up the eye-spooge afterward. The latest:
LET'S SEE WHO IS PAYING ATTENTION. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU ARE ON MY FRIENDS LIST AS A RESULT OF A CONSCIOUS DECISION. I WANT YOU THERE. I AM NOT ONLY GLAD TO COUNT YOU AS FRIENDS BUT ALSO FAMILY. LETS SEE WHO ACTUALLY PAYS ATTENTION. COPY THIS AS YOUR STATUS JUST FOR A MINUTE. I'LL BE WATCHING TO SEE WHO REALLY DOES... CHERISH FAMILY... & FRIENDSHIP. THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF MY LIFE. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
♥
This was posted by a really kind, smart lady I used to work with, and buried in the middle of its CAPSLOCK PASSIVE AGGRESSIVENESS OF DOOM is a really sweet sentiment that I have no doubt she means sincerely. You're on my friends list because I want you here. Unfortunately it kind of gets lost in the IF YOU DON'T POST THIS AS YOUR STATUS YOU DON'T REALLY LOVE ME BACK. HEARTS. So no, I'm not reposting it or anything like it, ever. If I agree with part of something like this, I might comment on that part -- in this case, "I'm glad we're friends. Merry Christmas!" -- and leave the rest of it alone, but hell no, I'm not reposting.
It just annoys me and makes me really sad that good people get suckered into passing this crap along.
OTOH: I am 100-ish pages into Sharon Shinn's Mystic and Rider, and loving it. If a book can evoke multiple entries from The Tough Guide to Fantasyland in its prologue ("you are not on the map," "slender youth" and "tour companions" for a start) and still grab all my attention, it's very much a keeper. I want to be Senneth when I grow up. Or maybe I want to marry Senneth. Um. Either way.
I'm finding myself really, really pissed at the treatment of mystics by people around the Southern houses, and really worried for Our Heroes. I wonder if it's because I just read an extremely distressing article about anti-gay sentiment in Uganda? The article is here, and very upsetting -- so much so I can't formulate any kind of response. But it's in the back of my mind when I'm reading about mystics being slaughtered, and I want to believe that kind of thing only happens in fiction -- or happened, past tense, in history -- but it still happens. It's happening to gays and lesbians in Uganda, and it's so awful I can't even react. I just shut down on it. I don't know.
On a lighter note... temperature kink? That's new. First I read it in Eight Days of Luke fic (warning: link goes to AO3; archive is slow during Yuletide season). Then I wrote it for Ficmas. But it took Senneth and Tayse for me to realize it's a thing. Huh.
Oh yeah, at this point I'd ship any combination of Mystic and Rider characters. *contented sigh*
In other news, I had the best long walk I've had with the dogs in ages, maybe because the temperature was up around freezing! (City Mouse does not like the cold, you see.) And I got some kick ass blue boots! And finished my Christmas shopping! And now I am off to read some more.

Date: 2010-12-22 02:07 am (UTC)I hate those chain messages SO MUCH. The only one I've posted has been one about dragons eating people as a spoof. Another I was tempted to use was a satire: Old Spice style 'look at your status, now look at mine'; plus it didn't directly tell us to watch it. :B

Date: 2010-12-22 12:55 pm (UTC)A very popular sentiment, I assure you.
The funny thing with Shinn is that she uses tropes and stereotypes often, but she's generally so good at both world-building and tying all forms of romance into the plot (thus making it necessary, rather than a happy side-effect of the adventure) that she's easy to forgive. For me, at least.
I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Date: 2010-12-24 09:07 pm (UTC)No, wait! One of us could be Senneth and the other one could still marry her. ;) I'm okay with that, too.
And omg now I want to spend Christmas reading the next one!
