Doctor Who

Long story short, yesterday BookGeekGal got me to watch the first episode of the new season of Doctor Who, and I'm enchanted. This weekend, we watched all 5 eps that are so far available in the US. I'm not entirely sure what I think of it, but I can't stop thinking of it, and I take that as a good sign. It's pretty rare that I sit through a whole hour-long TV show without getting distracted at some point (sad to say), but every episode had me riveted from start to finish.

I was immediately fascinated by the current Doctor, little Amelia, and then Amy.

My heart is still breaking over "The Beast Below." (Side note: it was fun to see Sophie Okonedo in action -- purely based on looks, I'd picked her out for the character Polyam on the Emelan casting thread at Goldenlake; I still think it would be a good fit.)

We had to stop watching right after "The Time of Angels" on Saturday, because "Flesh and Stone" wasn't available for download until today. I'm surprised I didn't have nightmares as a result. The weeping angels are terrifying  (though less so, now that I know they just kill you).

BookGeekGal is a Classic Who/Tom Baker fan, and she insists that the Daleks are scarier. I don't see it -- not yet, at least.

I'm now fascinated enough to start watching older eps, a whole lot of which are available on Nextfix instant watch. I haven't decided how to go about it, though. I've started at the beginning of Series 1, but the characters didn't draw me in the way the characters in the new season have. I might still watch straight through, or I might bounce around; either way, this could take me a while.

Not sure I needed another massive canon to be fannish about. But if it turns out that I'm seriously not allowed to use my hand for a while, at least I won't get bored.

Okonedo would be perfect for Polyam! I loved her as Liz Ten.

You should watch 'Blink' - it's in Series 3 of the reboot, and is pretty much a standalone ep (doesn't feature the Doctor much or any storyline of that series, but is totally awesome, written by the current head writer, and first ep of the weeping angels!).

I find the Angels scarier than the Daleks too, especially the way they play with your imagination - much more in their first appearance than their second.

I wasn't wholly fond of Chris Eccleston the first time I watched either (though I loved the first season finale); David Tennant was more my sort of Doctor, and Matt Smith more so again.

I haven't gotten to David Tennant yet, but I've heard a lot of good things. I will definitely watch Blink as soon as I think I can handle more weeping angels. :)
