My fic lives at my Archive of Our Own page. Some of its been posted here, too. But some hasn't, so AO3 is the best place to find most of it.

The majority of it is for Tamora Pierce (Tortall-verse) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The rest (right now) is Tamora Pierce (Emelan-verse), Angel, Firefly, Across the Universe, and Catherine Christian's retelling of Arthurian legend.

Sometimes I have Tamora Pierce fic (both universes) at the Goldenlake message board before I bother to archive it.

.... 'Cause I haven't done one in a while, and I have me some snazzy new icons. I'm gonna cheat & use more than one for some questions.

(Gakked from [ profile] bradcpu  while I was browsing for Buffy fic.)

Icon to the left: Image: Leelee Sobieski in Joan of Arc
Character: standing in for Keladry of Mindelan (Tortall)

This question has been kicking around in my brain for a while: what makes certain things more fandom- and fanfic-ready than others? Why do we decide to fic the things we fic?

I can only answer for myself, of course. I'm interested in hearing whether the conclusions I reach apply to others, as well.

For me, a fic-friendly canon has to be or include three things: the characters have to be compelling, the universe has to be compelling, and the story has to be – or at least feel – incomplete.

Title: Trickster's Pawn (part 1 of 2)
Rating: R
Length: about 3400 in this part; 5800 overall.
Fandom: Tamora Pierce, Tortall-verse (AU)
Characters: Keladry of Mindelan, Owen of Jesslaw. Also Iden, Warric and Buri
Summary: Kel's new friend, Wendy of Jesslaw, isn't exactly what she first seems.

Note: Like Fencing Lessons, this started as a crack!fic idea and became oddly serious. "What if Owen was actually a girl?" turned into a coming of age story about a transgendered character. I hope I handled it well.

I haven't posted a lot of fic directly to this journal lately. I'm posting this one because I want to write a commentary on it, which is more an LJ thing than an AO3 or King's Own thing.

Also note that I'm futzing with ages and Jesslaw family relations a little to fit the story.

Finally, this began life as a series of (closely connected) Smackdown ficlets, which results in some slightly odd chapter breaks.

Love? I could take it or leave it. But I don't want to be any man's wife. Ever. )

In Round 1 of the Smackdown, I wrote 126 entries, which total approximately 18,560 words (according to Archive of Our Own, or slightly more according to Open Office). Almost exactly half of that -- 63 entries, and 8932 words -- was for the last set of fights (54 entries for Buri, 9 for Owen). Earlier, I wrote 23 for Uline, 22 for Neal, 16 for Sabine, and 1 each for Wyldon and Yuki.

For the sake of sanity, I've collected these 126 entries into 26 longer works, all of which are posted on AO3, here. Some of these are linked into series, which I hope will make them a little easier to follow.

Eventually I'll get these up on The King's Own, too, but for now, at least they're archived someplace.

I wrote 24 Tortall-verse ficlets in the last week! Rather than post them all directly here, I decided to organize them on  AO3 and just provide links. (I do plan to just did put them up at Goldenlake's King's Own fan fiction archive as well.) Unless otherwise noted, these are all Kel/Uline, collections totaling 600 to 1200 words each, and rated T/PG-13. Also, I don't own any of these characters or settings, I'm just playing, transformative works, etc.

Knightly Virtues: Uline of Hannalof made a point of seeking out Page Keladry of Mindelan to offer encouragement and support. What if there was more to it than that? Series of seven ficlets set just after Kel and Uline meet for the first time.

One Small Change: AU in which Alanna's true identity was never publicly revealed. It seems like a small change, but twenty years later, Kel's life is very different as a result. Includes 4 Kel/Uline ficlets, and my lone Kel/Wyldon entry. This AU may show up in my future Smackdown entries, or it could become a series in its own right (depending on whether I can get that Firefly Big Bang done early).

Larger Than Life (R, 120 words): Short, immediate angst. From the outside looking in, Kel can do anything. But even the strongest have demons their loved ones don't always see. (Warning for possibly-triggery depression.)

At Fief Hannalof (R): Kel goes visiting. Six ficlets based on the quasi-canon fact (author-confirmed, but not in an actual book) that Kel's sister married one of Uline's relatives.

Random Ficlets: Mostly fluff, which didn't fit into any of the above. Includes "More than Pretty," in which the Royal Ladies are as useful as they are decorative; "Joining Forces," in which Kel is outnumbered by Uline and Alanna; and 3 other pieces.

For any Tamora Pierce fans who don't know, Goldenlake is hosting a Fanfic Smackdown during the next two months. Sixteen characters -- seven female, nine male -- are competing for the hand and heart of Lady Knight Keladry of Mindelan (protagonist of the Protector of the Small books, and the inspiration for my icon, here). See the guidelines for details.

Fics from drabble-length up are eligible, as long as they haven't been posted somewhere before -- each posted fic that deals with the relationship between Kel and a contestant character counts as one point for that contestant. So please join us if you ship Kel with: Alanna of Pirate's Swoop and Olau, Baird of Queenscove, Buri Tourakom, Domitan of Masbolle, Faleron of King's Reach, Joren of Stone Mountain, Lalasa Isran, Nealan of Queenscove, Owen of Jesslaw, Raoul of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak, Rikash Moonsword, Sabine of Macayhill, Uline of Hannalof, Vania of Conte, Wyldon of Cavall, and/or Yukimi noh Daiomoru.... or if you previously didn't, but think you could.

The first contest pits Uline of Hannalof against Alanna of Pirate's Swoop and Olau in one arena, and Wyldon of Cavall against Domitan of Masbolle in the other.

Schedule, and my COMPLETELY unbiased opinions, under the cut. )

Just realized I don't have a "het" tag yet. Ok, now I do, I'll see if I can remember to start using it...

Title: Protectress
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Tamora Pierce (Tortall universe)
Characters: Buri/Thayet
Disclaimer: I don't own these characters, their universe, or anything else of value. This is a derivative work and I'm just playing.
Summary: Buri promised to protect her princess. That's not as simple as she thought.
Author's Notes: Written for Goldenlake's Secrets & Lies Week (January 2010). Thanks to [ profile] faketoysoldier  and Carmarthen for getting me thinking about these two again.

I've reached the stage where I'm desperately impatient to reply to the comments left on my Yuletide fics. YULETIDE HAS EATEN MY BRAIN. I've been reading like crazy, and finally remembered to start bookmarking... so like everybody else, I'll have a recs post coming out pretty soon (starting with the excellent gift!fic I received).

In the meantime, I'm kind of in love with the fandom I wrote for (which is the other reason I'm so impatient for the Big Reveal -- I want to talk about it!). I know it's a bad idea to expect a one-night stand to turn into True Love, but I just can't help it!!

Actually, I'm not sure that's the right analogy.

Given the amount of attention and planning that goes into writing for Yuletide... it's more like the fandom I wrote for is my prom date, if my steady, Firefly,(1) goes to another school & is so popular she already had plans for prom night. I asked, what, a dozen other people if they'd be my date,(2) and one of them said yes. We all spent weeks getting ready for the Big Night. And, er, then I ended up dancing with someone else for the whole night (by which I mean writing something I didn't initially offer)... and that's the fandom I'm in love with now. I totally put out, but it was more than just a one night stand.

(1) Given the obvious history between us, I can see how you'd think Buffy was my main squeeze, but I assure you, we're just good friends now. Really. Firefly understands.

(2) I didn't ask my ex, the Tortall universe, because I figured she already had a date. I was right -- recs coming soon.

Does this mean I'm leaving Firefly for the new fandom? Well, um... truth is, it wasn't that serious to begin with -- it's not like we were exclusive or anything. See the icon? I have a whole lot of ideas for a lot of fandoms kicking around inside my head, some Yuletide-inspired and some not. It should be fun -- which is really what this is all about.

Today was my day off, and I spent an insanely large part of it copying fics over to AO3, then futzing around with tags, ratings, formatting & so on. I believe that I've now archived all the stories I've posted, anywhere, since I got re-involved in online fandom earlier this year. Except one, which I'm clearly not going to finish & I decided I don't like that much anyway. (Oh yeah, I'm PeroxidePirate there, too.)

buncha stats + link to a brand new Firefly fic under the cut! )

I had some other thoughts on Yuletide (I'm stuck! Meep!) and Real Life (dogs + rain =/= fun; bleached-blond hair "temporarily" dyed black = Big Adventures in Coloration)... but, again, need to do something else with the rest of my evening. Like fix the hair color. Or focus on the new source material that's going to save my butt in the Yuletide exchange. But we'll see.

Not a new fic, but one I wrote in August & just now realized I never posted here.

They Call This Progress?
Rating: PG-13
Length: 1250 words
Fandom: Tamora Pierce (Tortall)
Disclaimer: Just playing, no profit. I don't own these characters, this universe, or anything else of value.
Characters: George/Neal, Alanna, Aly, Alan, Kel

Summary: Companion piece to "Fencing Lessons." During the Grand Progress, George and his two youngest children visit Alanna. The Lioness is otherwise occupied, so George ends up spending time with her squire, instead.
